One spring day an asphalt track owner asked 8-year-old Tuffy Casey what his goal was, meaning for that day’s race. Without the slightest hesistation, Tuffy replied, “to drive on Sunday!” When Tuffy Casey was only 2 years old he would line the hymnals up on the church pew, and when the church was its quietest, he would start the engines and begin the race. Can you imagine the response in that Southern Baptist church? Racing is in his blood. His granddaddy Casey loved racing, working with a short-track car; so, his daddy grew up spending the weekend at tracks like South Alabama Speedway. At the age of 3, Tuffy began twice yearly trips to Talladega with his daddy and Uncle Paul.
When he was 8, his daddy bought a used kart, a kart stand, and some old tires. They picked a color scheme and spent many nights in the shop working on the kart. Early February, they loaded the kart into the back of a 1996 Chevrolet truck and headed to Lone Oak Speedway in Ozark, Alabama. After that first lap around the track, Tuffy knew it was only the beginning. The entire family headed to the track every Saturday until the season began. How amazing to begin his racing career with a first race, first win on April 29, 2007! Tuffy finished that season coming in 2nd in points in Purple Plate.
In 2008, he raced at Lone Oak, but the team also began to travel and raced at Dacosa Speedway in Byhalia, Mississippi. In 2009, we added a third track: Sunny South in Mobile, Alabama.
Tuffy won the 2009 Junior 3 (Gold) Race to your Dream series at Dacosa Speedway.
In 2010, Lone Oak closed down. So, it was go dirt or not race. For Tuffy, not racing was just not an option. His daddy had become friends with Tommy Hansen (Track Speed and MP Motorsports). Tommy invited Tuffy to Wilson’s to run his kart after the race. Running dirt was a great experience and became greater with each race!
On October 15-17, the team travelled to the 2010 Maxxis National Championship held at Thunder Valley Motorplex, Neeses, South Carolina. Tuffy finished 6th in Animal Gold Lite with a fast lap of 13.567 on Saturday, October 16. On Sunday, October 17th, Tuffy finished 13th in Animal Gold Heavy with a fast lap of 13.592.
2011 was another blessed year with Tuffy and the team continuing to learn. We ventured out to Laurens County Speedway and Gabby's Speedway competing in the Maxxis Mid-Georgia Series to get Tuffy seat time on different tracks. These two family-run tracks are well-ran and it was a pleasure to compete in this series. The series was a four race series with Tuffy winning two of the four, finishing second and third in the other two, securing the Maxxis Mid-Georgia Animal Gold Plate Championship. The team was invited to Maxxis 2011 Karting Nationals in Nesses, SC, on October 14-16. Tuffy qualified 14th in both Animal Gold Lite and finished 8th. He qualified 15th Animal Gold Heavy and finished 8th.
We are blessed to have been invited twice to the karting nationals and even more blessed to finish in the top 10 both years.
Tuffy’s goal for each race is to start the race, have fun, and finish the race, but his ultimate goal is to drive on Sunday! As Proverbs 16:3 says, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.” Tuffy has faith that the Lord will guide him just where He desires him to go.
